The History of Big Axe Spice!
"I've got an axe to grind with salt!"
In 2004, as a Park Ranger working in Florida at that time cleaning up debris from tropical winds, I began having various symptoms of what seemed to be heat exhaustion, dehydration, and possible kidney infection which lasted weeks. I finally went to my doctor, thinking it was probably kidney stones, and he listened to my heart and said, "do you know you have a heart murmur?" I had been told when I was younger that I had one, but that it would probably go away as I grew, as many people live with heart murmurs. My doctor then said my heart murmur "sounded loud" and I needed to get tested. I was quickly diagnosed with SEVERE mitral valve regurgitation and, within a few weeks, I was having open-heart surgery. It changed my life.
During recovery, one of the many things that changed was my view on salt. Salt is not bad, but the amount of salt we use is damaging. It was in everything! My family had salt on the table -we used it liberally and my wife even cooked with it regularly. I began to have an "axe to grind with salt," and our family began to make big changes. Our family loved bold flavors and, after exploring options for salt-free seasonings available on the market, I decided to take my own blend of seasonings that I regularly used, without the use of salt, and create a SALT FREE blend, while keeping that same bold flavor. It has since been a mainstay in our kitchen, as well as our family and friends' kitchens. We had returned back to our home state of Ohio, then our friends and family suggested we share it with others! So it began, the Big Axe Spice journey, from our kitchen to yours.
We started as an Ohio Cottage Food Operation and operated under the Ohio Department of Agriculture Cottage Food Operation Guidelines. We are also honored to be partners with the Ohio Proud organization. Recently we have expanded to a new location with a brand new commercial kitchen and got licensed by the Ohio Department of the USDA to sell our products nationwide -all across the United States! :)
Big Axe Spice blends include only herbs and spices - no salt, no preservatives, and no gluten. It doesn't matter how much you use, you'll never over-salt your food like with other blends. Increase the flavor - not your blood pressure! Big Axe Spice produces its blends from spices and herbs that are certified by the SQF Institute and we include locally-grown herbs and peppers when seasonally available as well.
